So You Want to Find a Dance Class?
Great decision! Dancing is one of the most rewarding hobbies you can take up - for your fitness, your social life, your confidence, and your general enjoyment of life. But with a few options out there, how do you know which dance class is right for you?
Aspirations Dance runs classes in Chester and Buckley, sitting right on the Cheshire and North Wales border - which means we're well placed for students coming from both sides. We've been part of both communities since 1997, and we know a thing or two about what makes a dance class genuinely worth your time. Here's what we'd encourage you to look for.
1. A Clear, Structured Course Programme
A good dance school should have a clear pathway for students to follow - not just a series of one-off classes with no sense of progression. Look for a school that can show you exactly where you'll start, how you'll develop, and where you could go over time.
At Aspirations Dance, our programme takes students from complete beginner right through to expert level, with clearly defined stages along the way.
2. A Teaching Method That Actually Works
This is one that many people don't think to ask about - but it matters enormously. There are broadly two approaches to teaching partner dancing:
- Routine-based: Both partners memorise a set sequence of steps and perform it together.
- Lead and follow: One partner communicates what's coming next through connection and physical cues; the other responds in real time.
We teach lead and follow - and we believe it's the superior approach for social dancing. Why? Because when two people memorise a routine separately, they can sometimes remember it differently. That can turn a dance into a disagreement pretty quickly! With lead and follow, there's no fixed script to get wrong. The dance is built on connection and communication, which means it works with any partner, in any setting, to any music. Read more about why we teach this way.
3. An Inclusive, Welcoming Atmosphere
The best dance classes feel welcoming from the moment you walk in. You shouldn't feel judged, rushed, or out of place. Look for a school where:
- Complete beginners are genuinely catered for - not just tolerated
- The pace suits you, and nobody is left behind
- There's a sense of fun and community in the room
We've worked hard to build exactly that kind of environment at Aspirations Dance, and it's something our students consistently tell us they value - whether they've travelled from Chester or the surrounding areas of North Wales or even further afield.
4. Experienced, Qualified Instructors
Teaching dance well is a skill in itself. Look for instructors who don't just dance to a high standard but can explain what they're doing clearly, adapt to different learning styles, and make students feel at ease.
With nearly three decades of experience, our instructors at Aspirations Dance have taught thousands of students - from complete beginners to those who've gone on to perform and compete. That depth of experience shows in the quality of teaching.
5. A Range of Dance Styles
If you're just starting out, you might not know yet which style of dancing you'll love most. A school that offers a broad range of styles gives you the chance to discover what suits you and keeps things fresh and exciting as you progress.
At Aspirations Dance, our beginner programmes alone covers Waltz, Merengue, Salsa, Mambo, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Jive, Argentine Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep, and Lindy Hop with plenty more to explore as you advance.
6. Convenient Locations
The best dance class in the world won't do you much good if you can't get there! Our two venues are chosen specifically to be accessible from a wide area. The Chester venue is easy to reach from across Cheshire, while Buckley is ideally situated for anyone coming from Flintshire, Wrexham, and the surrounding parts of North Wales.
Between the two locations, we're well within reach for a huge number of people who might not realise how close a great dance class actually is.
7. A Strong Local Reputation
Word of mouth still matters. A dance school that has been part of the local community for years - with students who return class after class, year after year - is a good sign that they're doing something right.
Aspirations Dance has been putting the fun into dance since 1997. That's 30 years of teaching, growing, and building a community of dancers across Chester, Cheshire, and North Wales. We're proud of the reputation we've built, and even prouder of the students who've been with us for it.
Ready to Take the First Step?
We'd love for your next dance class to be with us. Whether you're a complete beginner or you've danced before and want to get back into it, Aspirations Dance offers a friendly, structured, and genuinely fun environment to learn and grow - whatever side of the border you're coming from.
